Charleston, South Carolina: A Perfect Place for Engagement

Nick and Sarah had been on the road for months, traveling the country on their dream trip. They relaxed for a while in Vermont while they made their plans for the remainder of their little excursion. Then they flew into Atlanta to pick up the Jeep, which they had left safely tucked away until they returned from the north. Sarah ran up to it and threw herself onto the hood. “I missed you, baby,” she whispered and put her ear to the warm metal as if it would whisper back. Nick smiled as he opened the back and piled their bags in. “You ready?” He asked her as they climbed in. Petting the dashboard lovingly, she sighed. “Charleston, South Carolina. Engagement rings, right?” “Yup,” he said as he navigated his way to the 20. He knew that Sarah was travel-weary, to say the least, and was glad to take her to Charleston. She had spent a lot of vacations there when her Grandparents owned a house on nearby Sullivan’s Island, and had already told him that she planned to fall asleep on the beach for two or three days straight after they arrived.

Burlington, Vermont: Hubby Hubby Ice Cream and Pink Diamond Rings

As Nick steered the Land Rover northwest, toward maple syrup and engagement rings in Burlington, Vermont, Sarah unfolded and examined a map. They were stopping at the Ben & Jerry’s factory in Waterbury before they went into Burlington. Sarah was careful to wear comfortable clothes, as she intended to fully enjoy the “Flavoroom” Nick had high hopes of submitting enough votes to resurrect Peanut Butter & Jelly ice cream, which had been his favorite during its brief time.

“Look, Nicky,” Sarah shouted, “Cows!”

They saw a pasture with cows wandering around, as cows do, meandering and chewing their cud. As they drove into the grounds, they were both open-mouthed. They were actual cows from which Ben & Jerry’s ice cream was made.

Boston, Massachusetts: Natural Diamonds, Cultured Diamonds, and Fenway Park (Antique Diamond)

After a relaxing time up north, Nick and Sarah climbed into Sarah’s mom’s Land Rover, which would take them down the East Coast. They would next be looking at engagement rings in Boston, Mass. They would also find time to see a Red Sox game while they were there, because Fenway Park was an experience not to be missed. “You know who’s from Boston?” Sarah asked.

“Yes,” Nick said. “I do. Aerosmith.”

“Yes, and Benjamin Franklin,” Sarah went on. “Also Leonard Nimoy.”

The drive to the airport was only a few hours, and Nick and Sarah, having shipped a whole bunch of their accumulated treasures back home, were looking forward to spending a long weekend attending a wedding, seeing friends, and looking at engagement rings in Portland, Maine. They were both a little road-weary and happy for the break.

Jackson, Mississippi: Diamonds, Diamond Jaxx, and Healing Wine.

Nick nodded and listened to see what soundtrack she was selecting for this leg of the trip. He was expecting something sticky and heavy, like the Dr. John and Professor Longhair that they had been listening to for the last week, where each note sounded upbeat yet damp somehow. Instead, he was hearing the beginning of “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes”.

“Jimmy Buffett?” Nick asked. “He’s so…beachy.”

“He’s from Mississippi,” Sarah said.

New Orleans, Louisiana: Ghosts, Jazz, and Antique Diamonds, Oh My!

Nick and Sarah headed east to Louisiana. They had been there before, for Mardi Gras, but never to look around and really see the city—especially how antique engagement rings in New Orleans were different. They had to be.

“It will be nice,” Sarah said, “to see New Orleans without all the Mardi Gras mess going on.”

“Agreed,” Nick told her. “But it WAS fun.”

“Yeah,” Sarah laughed, “after we looked at the pictures to see what happened.”

Nick looked thoughtful. “I’d still give a nickel to know,” he said, “how and when I got into that cow costume.”

Houston, Texas: Baseball Diamonds, Engagement Rings and…Absinthe?

After a semi-embarrassing trip to Hippie Hollow, Nick and Sarah hopped in the Jeep and headed southeast to find THE Houston, Texas perfect engagement ring.
Sarah leaned her head back against the headrest and looked at Nick.
“If everything truly IS bigger in Texas, do you think that will mean the diamonds are bigger?” She asked.
Nick smiled. “Do you really believe everything is bigger in Texas?”
“I read it on a t-shirt somewhere,” Sarah explained. Taking Nick’s hand off of the gear-shift, she kissed it and told him, “I don’t believe EVERYTHING is.”

The ride to Austin was not long, only about an hour and a half, so Sarah had to fit her annoying games into a short time.

“Babe,” She said to Nick, “You know what awesome movies were partially filmed in Austin?”

Nick sighed and leaned back against the headrest. “What if Austin, Texas has engagement rings unlike any other in the world?” Nick asked. “Will you then be sorry you made me play this game?”

Sarah smiled. “Probably not. ‘Dazed and Confused’ was filmed here.”

Nick laughed. “Well, awright,” he quoted his favorite character from the movie, played by Matthew McConaughey before anyone knew who he was. “He has a house here, babe,” Nick told her.

They started the day by running at Tom McCall Waterfront Park along the Willamette River. Then, having sweated out pure Grey Goose, they went back to the hotel to shower.
Los Angeles, California: Engagement Ring Central

“Well, I can only speak of celebrities,” Sarah responded, “but yes, if you are a female celebrity in Los Angeles, California, engagement rings probably make up the bulk of your jewelry collection.”
Nick looked puzzled. “Isn’t there some kind of etiquette about returning a ring if you break the engagement?”
Sarah smiled. “I think that only applies if the guy can’t necessarily afford to buy a small island without breaking a sweat,” she told him.

San Diego, California: Diamonds, Colored Diamonds

As Nick and Sarah got on the road to San Diego, California—their first stop of a few in the state—Sarah leaned back in her seat and looked at Nick.

“It’s a funky city. I’ll bet San Diego, California is colored diamond central,” she said. “Maybe some pink diamonds, or some orange diamonds. Hopefully pink. I can channel my inner J. Lo.”

Las Vegas, Nevada: The Hard Rock, Diamond Rocks, and a Five-Diamond Meal

Anxious to check out Las Vegas itself, and to see what colossal array of engagement rings Las Vegas had to offer, Nick and Sarah were a little bit giddy. They had already made arrangements to stay at the Hard Rock Hotel, see Cirque du Soleil at the Bellagio, and eat at La Cirque, also at the Bellagio. Neither of them had any great interest in gambling, so they’d have plenty of time to check out “Sin City”.

Phoenix, Arizona: Diamonds, Diamondbacks, and a 5 Diamond Golf Game.

“There’s something a little poetic here. We will be looking in Phoenix, Arizona at diamond engagement rings, we are going to see an Arizona Diamondbacks game, and we are playing golf on a five-diamond course,” he said to Sarah.

A Flying Engagement in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Having seen a lot of what the Midwest had to offer in engagement rings, Albuquerque, New Mexico and its Southwestern appeal would be Nick and Sarah’s next stop. They would also catch up with the International Balloon Fiesta, in which 700 hot-air balloons would take off at once. It was a major to-do in the city, and put Albuquerque, New Mexico on the world-wide map. Prior to that, Sarah’s only knowledge of Albuquerque is that Bugs Bunny often lamented that he should have taken a left turn there.

Denver, Colorado and Breckenridge, Colorado: Black Diamond Towns

Having re-dedicated themselves to the search for the perfect engagement ring, Nick and Sarah headed for Denver, Colorado. They would be staying about an hour from there, in Breckenridge, Colorado, because Sarah’s best friend from childhood lived in nearby Frisco. Sarah had been promising to visit for years, but hadn’t ever gone.

Cheyenne, Wyoming: The Gold Standard of Rodeos.

Nick and Sarah were next headed to look at diamond engagement rings in Cheyenne, Wyoming, but mostly they couldn’t wait to get to Cheyenne's Frontier Days, which is known as the “Daddy of ‘em all” in the rodeo world. Neither had ever been to a real rodeo before. Nick turned the radio on to a country/western station to put them in the right frame of mind. Although Frontier Days—and its corresponding riotously fun Frontier Nights—could keep them busy all day, every day for nine straight days, they vowed to focus a little more time on the jewelry business.

Three Diamond Digs in Casper, Wyoming.

The ride down I-80 gave them a good idea of what being “Out West” was about. During this time, Sarah, who was driving, asked Nick to get online and find the best hotel they could get in Casper, Wyoming. Being raised in the city gave her a fear of staying in some dusty motel a la “Psycho”. She didn’t like tumbleweeds or insects the size of rats (cockroaches don’t count when you’re a New Yorker).

Billings, Montana and Fresh Diamond Rings

Nick and Sarah opted not to tell him all of the events at the Sturgis Rally. They smiled and waved goodbye as they headed off to their next destination.
Sarah looked at Nick, held out her left hand, and said: “Maybe your Royal Cheapness can buy me a diamond engagement ring in Billings, Montana, since you skipped right to the Harley-themed wedding rings”.

Wedding Rings, Diamonds, and the Sturgis Bike Rally: Why Jagermeister is Dangerous.

Nick and Sarah said goodbye, put on their ultra-cool, “Easy Rider”-style helmets, and kicked the Harley into motion. They would ride the 5 hours to Rapid City, South Dakota to check out engagement rings in the 57701 zip code, then head off to Sturgis for the biggest Harley Rally in the country. Sarah was giddy with anticipation. She was even ready, if necessary, to drink too much beer and ride topless down the main drag. She did, after all, want to fit in.

Sioux Falls with Uncle Jake and Aunt Eileen

Sarah smiled. She knew Nick’s aunt and uncle were preparing an all-out barbecue feast in honor of their arrival from New York. Sarah was giddy at the thought of sleeping in a real bed and taking a hot shower for a few nights before heading out again—even if it meant being in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a place she thought she’s never go.

Iowa City, Iowa: The Next Frontier.

Nick and Sarah left the Grand Cherokee safely in Omaha and unloaded their bikes. It was only a short ride across the river to Council Bluffs, Iowa, for the beginning of RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa). She was oddly excited to see Iowa, after doing some research on it. Prior to that, all she knew about Iowa is the people there could make a vowel last for-e-ver.

We join our heroes, Nick and Sarah, as they go on a cross-country tour, something they’ve dreamed of for years.
