Pacquiao vs. Cotto in Las Vegas: Fight Week for Fire Power

Las Vegas, Nevada – Today, reigning Fighter of the Year Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao and three-time world champion boxer Miquel Cotto arrive in Las Vegas to kick off the beginning of what is being billed as the “Fight Week for Fire Power”, which will culminate in a match between the two on Saturday, November 14 at 9pm EST (6pm PT). The MGM Grand plays host to the event, which is being broadcast live on HBO Pay-Per-View, as well as via satellite to countries all over the world. The twelve-round title fight brings the Philippines’ ‘pound-for-pound king’ and the current WBO World Welterweight Champion together in one of the most anticipated—and promoted—fights in history.

Ring Magazine released a list of its pound-for-pound rankings, placing Pacquaio (49-3-2, 37 KOs) at the top of the list and Cotto (34-1, 27 Kos) at #7. The welterweights each have their own strengths and weaknesses, and the fight is predicted to be a great one. The winner will not only achieve the title of World Boxing Champion; he will also receive a customized belt to commemorate the victory.

Yankees Win World Series and Ostentatious Championship Rings

Last night’s World Series Game 6 brought to a close the hopes of the Philadelphia Phillies to earn two championship titles in a row. When the New York Yankees Closer Mariano Rivera pitched the final out of the game, he gave his team their 27th World Series win, and a fifth Championship ring for himself, Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada.

Although the players will not receive their rings until a ceremony at the beginning of the 2010 season, they still have a trophy to hoist in the air, parties to attend, and a parade the likes of which only New York City can give them after waiting 9 years to become champions again. The rings will be, undoubtedly, worth waiting for. The Yankees 2000 World Series ring weighs more than an ounce, features 22 diamonds and 34.5 grams of gold. It is so large that it has three subway cars—representing the ‘Subway Series’ victory over the Mets and three consecutive championships—etched above the fa?ade of Yankee Stadium. The value of the ring is relative, since it has an ‘intrinsic value’ based on what it represents. After the 2000 win, a memorabilia dealer paid $18,000 for the ring of a Yankee executive, and Dick Williams, consultant to the team at the time, sold his ring at auction for $34,787.

Roman Polanski May Choose To Face Charges In U.S.

Renowned film director, Roman Polanski, may choose to face sentencing in the United States soon, as his current conditions are terrible. The auteur is currently held in Swiss detention, with no significant chance for bail or house arrest.
Currently Polanski is in the midst of a lengthy extradition procedure – the U.S. want to put him on trial for a 1977 sex charge, since he fled the country before sentencing. Thus far Polanski has fought against the extradition, but one of his lawyers said he may decide to face justice in The States to avoid the lengthy extradition procedures.
The Oscar-winning director was arrested in Switzerland on September 26. On Tuesday, a Swiss court denied his request for release on bail, saying there was a strong risk that he would flee.
Lawyer George Kiejman said on Europe 1 radio: “We could be heading toward an extradition if the Swiss justice system does not take into account arguments against it. If the procedure drags on, it is not impossible that Roman Polanski could choose to go and explain himself in the United States, where there are some arguments in his favor.

Phil Collins Can’t Play Drums Anymore

Personally, I don’t want to live in a world where Phil Collins can’t play drums, but it looks like I may have to. The Grammy-winning, multi-platinum selling pop star recently told a German newspaper that he doesn’t have feeling in his fingers and he isn’t able to pick up his drum sticks.
Collins underwent surgery in April to repair a dislocated vertebra in his neck - seems as though the surgery left the musician without the ability to play his favorite instrument. The 58-year-old songsmith was quoted as saying the only way he could drum is if he were to “glue drumsticks to my hands.”
But Phil has no plan to give up music entirely. He told the newspaper he plans a recording a new album that will feature covers of 30 Motown covers next year: “I want the songs to sound exactly like the originals,” he told the paper.

The Biggest Mass Wedding In A Decade

More than 40,000 people from around the world were recently involved in the biggest mass wedding in over a decade. Brides in white dresses and Japanese kimonos joined grooms in black suits and red ties to exchange wedding rings.
The mass wedding was the largest ‘blessing ceremony” held by the Unification Church since 1999. 89-year-old Reverend Sun Myung Moon, the controversial founder of the church, oversaw the ceremony. His followers are known as Moonies.
Most of the couples receiving blessing were marrying for the first time, but many were renewing their vows. The reverend also blessed 10,000 couples from Sweden to Brazil, who were taking part in ceremonies around the world.
The massive world-wide ceremony was meant to celebrate two key anniversaries in the leader's life: his 90th birthday and his 50th wedding anniversary. Sun Myung Moon is getting ready to hand everyday leadership of the church over to his children.
Dressed in a sharp black suit, Rev. Moon sprinkled holy water over the couple before they exchanged rings.

Roman Polanski To Fight Extradition

No one can argue that Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski hasn’t had his share of misfortune, both privately and publicly. Well, looks like the 76-year-old auteur has just been dealt another significant blow, being arrested over the past weekend in Switzerland over a 31-year-old U.S. arrest warrant.
Despite Polanski’s claim that American prosecutors had never tried to nab him after he fled overseas over thirty years ago, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said it had contact with several countries in an effort to arrest the ‘Pianist’ director.
Polanski's arrest in Switzerland on Saturday sparked an outcry from several European supporters asking why American authorities chose to act now, even though Polanski has been living and working openly in Europe for decades.
Polanski’s famous trial was found to be a gross injustice due to the behavior of the now-deceased judge during the case. According to Polanski’s lawyer, “the District Attorney's Office in the 30 years since Mr. Polanski left the jurisdiction, has not once sought to have him extradited. If it had, there would have been a hearing regarding the misconduct in this case.”

Diamond Thief Charged With Attempted Murder

In what has already been hailed as Britain’s biggest jewel heist, two gunmen casually strolled into Graff Jewelers in Mayfair, an upscale London store, and stole diamonds worth $65 million last month. Yesterday, British police charged a man, in connection with the heist, with attempted murder,
Although six other men have already been charged with conspiracy to rob the renowned jeweler, Aman Kassaye, 24, faces the most serious charge thus far related to the robbery.
Besides attempted murder, Kassaye, is also charged with conspiracy to rob Graff Jewelers, imprisoning and detaining a person against their will, and using a handgun with intent to resist or prevent the arrest or detention of himself and others.
The aftermath of the robbery was captured by amateur video, and it shows screaming pedestrians and shoppers ducking for cover and trying to escape as a shot is fired. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Security camera footage released shortly after the theft showed two men in entering the store, pulling out guns, and briefly taking an employee hostage. They escaped via several getaway cars.
As of yet, none of the 43 stolen items has been recovered.

DJ AM’s Funeral To Be Held In California

Adam Goldstein, better known as DJ Am, passed away on August 28th, but the details surrounding his death are still uncertain. It was first reported that Goldstein died of an accidental overdose - now different reports suggest he may have committed suicide. Eight undigested OxyContin pills were found in his body, and a ninth still in his mouth. Also, crack paraphernalia was found near his body.

Although the funeral plans haven’t yet been made public, Adam’s body has been released and is reported to be heading to California to be buried there. His mother, Andrea, lives in Los Angeles. Speculation suggests that the funeral will take place in California later this week.

Goldstein, who once gave Nicole Richie an engagement ring, was said to be devastated about the recent break up with his girlfriend, Hayley Wood. Sources say that authorities who entered Goldstein's New York apartment found a Valentine's Day card in the next room from Haley Wood. Beside the card were six or seven photos of Wood and Goldstein.

Goldstein and good friend Travis Barker, of pop-punk band Blink 182, were involved in a serious plane crash less than a year ago. The accident left four dead. The duo barely escaped by sliding down the wing of the fallen plane. They were both in critical condition after surviving the crash.

Two Gunmen Steal £40million Worth Of Gems In Britain's Biggest Jewel Heist

In what’s being hailed as Britain’s biggest jewel heist, two gunmen casually strolled into Graff Jewelers in Mayfair, an upscale London store, and stole gems worth £40million.
The robbers struck at 4.20pm, on Thursday, after convincing a security guard to let them in. They then drew handguns before stealing 43 pieces of jeweler in less than two minutes. Their pillage included diamond earrings and a platinum white diamond ring.
The burglars were captured on CCTV before firing two shots and escaping. They then jumped into a blue BMW which was parked close and smashed into a taxi a minute later.
The crooks got out and fired a second shot, forcing pedestrians to take flight and then got into a Mercedes Benz and sped away.
