Two Diamond District wholesalers were arrested yesterday in connection with a 2008 $4 million diamond jewelry heist. The two alleged robbers were disguised as Hasidic Jews during the holdup. If this seems familiar to you, it should… it is very similar setup to Guy Richie`s film Snatch.
Atul Shah, 48, and Mahaveer Kankariya, 43, were charged with grand larceny, insurance fraud and falsifying business records for a staged gunpoint robbery at their Midtown store on New Years Eve in 2008.
According to Law enforcement sources, enhanced video surveillance footage shows the pair stealing the jewelry before the fake. "The whole thing was set up," said a source.
The fake robbery took place during the daytime on December 31, 2008. The robbers wore typical Orthodox garb – black coats, hats and beards – and flashed fake ID`s to get inside the building. After they were buzzed into the store, the pair drew guns and held up Shah and another employee. They demanded Shah clean out the safe of all diamonds and jewels, before tying up the two men with duct tape and fleeing the scene.
One of the fake robbers is currently being questioned, although his accomplice is still at large.
