Pittsburgh, PA – Last night, the Pittsburgh Steelers received their latest batch of Super Bowl rings in a ceremony at Heinz Field`s East Club Lounge. The ring, commemorating last season`s win against the Arizona Cardinals, was, to say the least, a bit ostentatious. Quarterback Charlie Batch explained that, "This is the defining moment to put an exclamation point on last season." This is one huge punctuation mark. As Batch held up his ring from Super Bowl XL, it seemed half the size of the latest ring.
"When everybody opened his box, it was like `Wow!`" He said.
In keeping with Steelers tradition, the ring is black and gold. The face of the ring contains 6 large brilliant-cut diamonds—one for each Super Bowl victory. There are 7 other diamonds that represent their 7 conference championships, and 7 below that to sum up their 14 division titles. Also on the giant face of this amazing piece of jewelry is a red, blue, and yellow stone resembling the Steelers` logo.
One one side of the ring are icons representing 6 Lombardi trophies, and the 27-23 score of the game. The other side of each ring has the owner`s name, his jersey number, the Steelers` helmet logo, and the NFL logo. How does all of that fit onto one ring? It is huge. When shown in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on the finger of Nick Eason, a 6`3", 305-pound man, the ring still looks enormous.
All together, the ring includes 63 diamonds and is made of 14-karat gold.
The ceremony was originally scheduled to start later, but they pushed the time back since many of the players had tickets to the Stanley Cup final game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings. Although the band was ready to play until 11, players started filing out before 8, giant boxes containing giant rings in hand. They didn`t want to miss the opportunity to root for another Pittsburgh team to win a championship.
