De Beers to reveal advanced diamond processing technology in South Africa trade show

Fri, January 25 2008, 06:35 EST

Diamond producer De Beers is about to reveal some of its successful diamond technology, but not completely.
The company intends to use South Africa`s largest mining exhibition in September to show off some of its advanced African technology. A great deal of this has been used to create diamond wealth on the African continent, for the African continent.

De Beers` technology division is currently in the process of reviewing external marketing opportunities for its renowned diamond technologies. The firm will use the Electra Mining exhibition in Johannesburg, which takes place from September 8 to 12, to launch its marketing of its technologies.

Some of the company`s processes and equipment are known by zoological acronyms. This includes the Whale, short for a wet, heavy and large-extraction machine. It is designed to recover diamonds in the 25-mm- to 75-mm-size range, after initial crushing.

Diamonds are recovered in free fall. At that time the detection and separation of free-falling particles is conducted.
The machines are used to identify diamonds with blue florescent light, which is picked up by a multilier tube. A mechanical or air injector separates the diamond from the tailings.

The detection sensitivity of the machine is able to be adjusted and calibrated, to the most efficient level. Diamond recovery is increased, while decreasing the volume of waste material.
