Diamonds have been traded in Antwerp since the 15th century. Back in those days, they were swapped in the city`s inns. Today the diamond industry is a major part of this city`s economy and has helped to transform it into a cultural center.

There are approximately 1,500 diamond companies and four diamond exchanges in the city center. The diamond trade each year in Antwerp brings in about $39 billion US. The diamond trade here used to be associated with the city`s Jews, but now many cultures participate. The Diamond District is near the railway station, and there are many famous jewelry stores at the station itself, which lends itself to fantastic window shopping.

The city`s Diamond Museum features a stunning collection of diamonds. The current exhibition is titled Bling Bling. There also is a place called Diamondland where tourists can observe highly skilled polishers and cutters practicing their craft.
