The Academy Awards have always promised the year`s best show of glamour, from the tips of celebrities` designer shoes to top of their perfectly-coiffed heads. The Oscar Red Carpet is the place where trends are created. From large costume pieces to trademark diamonds, stars know that the perfect way to accent their couture dresses is jewelry, and this year is predicted to be no exception.
"I think this year at the Oscars, as we normally see, it`s going to be lots of classic, Hollywood glamour," says Francesca Ferrante of the Diamond Information Center. "Whether it`s big statement earrings or a couple of bracelets layered together, the diamonds are going to be substantial…Each year at the Oscars the is normally $400 million worth of diamond jewelry." She then wisely adds, "That`s a lot of carats per star". Diamonds have always been the fail-safe option for the Red Carpet. Classic white diamonds complement any color of dress beautifully.
But this year, a trend that has already been seen on the red carpets of the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes is colored gemstones and colorful dresses. The most-cited example of this is Diane Kruger at this year`s SAG Awards. She wore a Jason Wu-designed marigold-yellow dress with Harry Winston ruby and diamond drop earrings. The red was an unusual and stunning accent for her gown and garnered a lot of media attention.
Experts predict that the jewelry will continue to be big, bold, and colorful. Statement jewelry has been wildly popular across the globe for the past few seasons, and what was formerly considered to be `gaudy` or `too much` by fashion aficionados is now not only acceptable, but recommended. Last year, Angelina Jolie`s long emerald earrings and enormous matching ring were the talk of the fashionistas.
Diamonds will be on display in another way at the 2010 Academy Awards as well. The celebrity swag bags from a show of this magnitude are always full of ultra-expensive, rare treats ranging from diamond jewelry to complimentary vacations. For the first time in Oscar history, lab-grown diamonds will be given out to the stars. Southern California`s Diamantine, using patent-pending technology, created real diamonds in a lab setting. Because the entire process is carefully controlled, every diamond made comes out completely flawless, unbreakable, and guaranteed for life. Internally flawless natural diamonds are very rare, causing them to be proportionately expensive. Lab-grown diamonds are all flawless and therefore far less costly. Many environmentalists also prefer these diamond simulants because there is not the risk of harming the environment or getting a diamond from a questionable source. Using the tagline "Lab Diamonds Rock!", Diamantine is working its way into the hands of the most popular celebrities in the entertainment world.
The Red Carpet at the Academy Awards is the most-watched fashion event. Less than being about the actual awards handed out during the ceremony, it is about which celebrity is wearing designs by whom and what the latest trends are. We can expect color, statement jewelry, and traditional Hollywood glamour, all wrapped up together.
