1000th diamond found this year at Crater of Diamonds State Park, Arkansas

Fri, December 07 2007, 04:30 EST

A man in Urfreesboro, Arkansas in the U.S. walked past a filled-in hole at Crater of Diamonds State Park. He saw a sparkle. He picked up a 3.48 caret diamond, which was the biggest diamond he has found in digging he has conducted since last March.

The stone is the 1,000th diamond found this year in the park.

The man found the diamond in soil that had come from the top layer of soil where he had previously dug.

The diamond that he found this week is of light-brown color and is rectangular in shape, and is about the size of a piece of Chicklets chewing gum.

The man said that he would be willing to sell the diamond to interested parties. However, the park prohibits him from officially offering the diamond for sale.

Crater of Diamonds State Park is known as the world`s only diamond-producing area that is open to visitors. Visitors are allowed to keep diamonds they find. The largest ever found was a 16.37 caret white diamond found in 1975.
