Socialite Paris Hilton was the victim of a robbery on Friday, when a thief broke into her Los Angeles home and stole an estimated $2 million of jewelry and other belongings.

"At around 5 a.m. Friday, officers received a call from a security guard who reported that Paris Hilton`s residence had been broken into," said Julie Sohn, an LAPD spokeswoman, in an interview with PEOPLE about the jewelry heist.

The L.A. Times, citing anonymous LAPD detectives, reported that an estimated $2 million in jewelry was stolen.  The burglar (or burglars) apparently entered the home through an unlocked door. Hilton was not at home during the incident.

According to LAPD Officer April Harding, a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and gloves ransacked Hilton`s bedroom, took jewelry and unknown property, and fled.  A security guard called the police at 5 am on Friday and reported a forced entry.

Hilton, 27, is the great-granddaughter of Conrad Hilton, founder of the Hilton Hotels. She had a television show – "The Simple Life" – and has pursed an acting and singing career.

This is not the first time that thieves have targeted Hilton`s jewelry collection: in 2004, several thousands dollars worth of jewelry and valuables were taken from a home that Paris shared with her sister Nicky Hilton.
