The marriage of Katy Perry, the pop singer superstar, to comedian and actor Russell Brand is  officially over. Brand has filed for divorce, just 14 months after tying the knot Perry, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Brand was recently seen looking fatigued and gloomy in London, without his wedding ring. And Perry was recently photographed enjoying the holidays on the beaches of Hawaii sans her unique wedding ring, a solid wide band with diamonds set in darkened platinum that is said to have cost $75,000. 

Sources say that Katy Perry’s drinking and partying lifestyle clashed with Brand’s desire to settle down to a quiet life with kids, despite his sordid past as a wild bachelor. Perry, who claimed to want to bear his children in the past, apparently isn't yet ready to slow down. Also, the couple's hectic work schedules worked against the marriage by keeping them apart.

“Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends,” said Brand in a statement.

The divorce announcement comes just a few weeks after Brand told Ellen DeGeneres that his marriage was going strong. Trouble was clearly visible on the horizon recently when the pair spent this last Christmas apart.

“I'm really happily married. I’m married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge. I’m still alive,” said Brand to Ellen. In his autobiography, Brand wrote, “I knew I'd marry her on that first date.”

Katy Perry and Russell Brand began dating after meeting at an MTV Music Awards party in 2009. Brand proposed just  four months later. The couple were married in October 2010 in a lavish Hindu ceremony in India which included elephants, juggler, and acrobats.  In addition to flaunting matching wedding rings, the couple also sport matching tattoos— of a Sanskrit phrase that references their engagement site.  

According to celebrity gossip site TMZ, Brand, 36, filed for divorce because filing for divorce goes against Perry's religious upbringing. This is the reason that Brand was the one to officially end the marriage.

The couple own several properties together and the allocation of assets is yet to be determined. Brand claims he wants to remain close friend with Perry. Hopefully, the divorce proceedings will be brief and amicable so that Perry and Russell can continue to flourish in their careers and lives.
