It looks as though Candace Bushnell will be taking off her wedding ring and hitting the town solo. The 53-year old Sex and the City creator announced that she is getting divorced from her husband of nine years, Charles Askegard. Bushnell married Charles Askegard, 10 years her younger, on July 4, 2002.

Last Friday, her rep released a statement saying, “We had some wonderful times in our nine-year marriage, and I still care about Charles as a person. I respect his desire to pursue his own happiness and hope that we will continue to be friends in the future."

According to friends close to the couple, their divorce was inevitable and had been in the works for a while.
"This has been coming for a long time. They have been living increasingly separate lives," an anonymous source revealed.

Bushnell too made a statement about the divorce. "We had some wonderful times in our nine-year marriage, and I still care about Charles as a person. I respect his desire to pursue his own happiness and hope that we will continue to be friends in the future," the creator and writer said of Askegard.

Bushnell married Charles Askegard, 10 years her younger, on July 4, 2002. Askegard, who was a dancer for the New York City Ballet for 24 years, left this past September to create his own troupe, Ballet Next. Bushnell, on the other hand, was a columnist for the New York Observer. Her Sex in the City column became an anthology and eventually lead to the hit TV series starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The Emmy-winning TV series ran for six years and was the inspiration for two films.

What is the reason for their divorce?  Askegard had allegedly been cheating on Bushnell with ballerina Georgina Pazcoguin. According to the New York Post, the couple have been close for the past eigh years, working together at the New York City Ballet.

Whether the rumors are true or not, it’s over for Bushnell and Askegard. Bushnell might want to take out some old Sex in the City DVD’s and channel her inner Carrie Bradshaw. After all, she’s newly single and ready to hit the big city!
