In January of 2011, Kat Von D showed off her 4-carat platinum engagement ring to the world when she became engaged to Jesse James. Created by celebrity engagement ring designer Neil Lane, the ring features a large amount of handwork and detailing, which seems fitting for the tattooed star of LA Ink.

Less than a year into their engagement, Kat Von D found out that Jesse James had cheated on her with a whopping 19 women, which, needless to say, has led to a ton of negative media coverage and the end of their relationship. It’s also led Jesse James to demand the ring back from Kat Von D, which cost him a cool $50,000.

Why is he asking for it back? Rumor has it that Jesse James is having financial problems and desperately needs the money.

The questions on the table are twofold: firstly, if an engagement becomes defunct, does the man or the woman get to keep the ring? Some might argue that it is the man’s property, as he is the one who typically pays for it. Others might argue that the ring is a gift to the woman, and regardless of what happens to the relationship, the woman should keep the ring.
The second thing to consider is: what happens when infidelity is involved? Does the ring serve as reparations for having been wronged by the person you love and thought you were going to be with forever?

Though the answers to these questions may not be easy, chances are slim that Kat Von D will ever give up her platinum engagement ring.
