American Idol contestants know a thing or two about engagement rings. Lee DeWyze, Paul McDonald, and most recently, Danny Gokey, proposed to their girlfriends within the past year, each with a diamond ring glitzier than the next.

On Tuesday, American Idol season-8 finalist Danny Gokey asked girlfriend Leyicet Peralta to be his beloved wife. James Allen has the scoop on his proposal and the exquisite engagement ring he gave Peralta.

"Danny originally chose a ring that was too big for Leyicet's finger," the former American Idol contestant’s rep said "so they went on a hunt for a new one together."

Gokey and Peralta had no intention of spending an exorbitant amount on the ring. The couple has a limited budget because they donate a lot of money to Sophia's Heart, a charity established in memory of Gokey's late wife, Sophia, who died during heart surgery three years ago.

"Leyicet had a specific budget she did not want to go over," Gokey's rep added. "The couple know they have a lot of responsibility with Sophia's Heart, so they wanted to make sure they spent their money wisely."

What about the most exciting part— the proposal?
According to Gokey's rep, the engagement was incredibly romantic.

"Danny surprised Leyicet and had a car pick her up. They had an intimate dinner by the ocean under a beautiful sunset in downtown Miami. After dinner, they went to the ballet, and finally Danny took her where they had their first date. Danny serenaded Leyicet with a song her mother used to sing to her as a baby, 'You Are So Beautiful,' and then he popped the big question. She, of course, enthusiastically said yes," he told PEOPLE.  “The couple have been getting a lot of support and are very grateful to have found each other…needless to say, they are ecstatic and excited about the upcoming nuptials."

Congratulations Danny and Leyicet. And Danny, great job picking out the engagement ring…it’s beautiful!
