Farrah Fawcett, the 1970s sex symbol who has been in the news lately as she continues her battle with cancer, will soon exchange wedding rings with longtime love Ryan O’Neal. The couple has been together for over 30 years and has a 24-year old son, Redmond. The startling recent images of Farrah, underweight and clearly suffering from her disease, have caused a wave of emotion throughout Hollywood, and, in fact, the world. Fawcett, at one point weighing as little as 89 pounds, has been mostly nourished through an IV. Even yesterday, as Fawcett was once again admitted to the hospital, O’Neal maintains that he still wants to marry her, even as “she fights for her life”. The couple’s romance has been an unusual one, lasting far longer than most Hollywood romances—and, in fact, most relationships in the world. They have stuck together through thick and thin, and this is no exception. “I’ve asked her to marry me—again—and she’s agreed,” the 68-yearold O’Neal told Barbara Walter on 20/20. “As soon as can say yes. Maybe we can just nod her head.” He also said that, despite Fawcett’s ever-worsening health, they will absolutely get married. In 2006, Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer which then spread to her liver. But she never stopped fighting the disease. Says O’Neal, “…in the last two years I’ve loved her more than I’ve ever loved her—ever. She’s so much more of a woman: powerful, courageous, fearless, and all those adjectives. And I look at her with awe.” Hopefully, the two will be able to marry soon. This will live on in Hollywood lore as one of the great love stories of all time, eerily mirroring the movie that made O’Neal a star in 1970, “Love Story”.
