| New Orleans Celebrates Mardi Gras and Super Bowl Victory in Style Tue, February 16th 2010, 05:25 EST | | New Orleans, LA – This year’s Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans began, as usual, two weeks before the final day of official festivities, Fat Tuesday itself. Some have said that this is the first year that the celebration isn’t tainted in some way my memories of Hurricane Katrina. Between the New Orleans Saints winning the Super Bowl a week ago and the rebuilding of the city, people are feeling—for the first time in almost five years—like celebrating. At Saturday’s Endymion parade, the crowd was at least 20 deep and many had camped out for days to catch some of the finest beads and favors thrown at Mardi Gras. The Grand Marshal of the parade was announced in the beginning of January: Saints Owner Tom Benson. From his Vince Lombardi Trophy-themed float, he waved to the jubilant crowd and held up signs, thanking him for not moving the team after Katrina hit. Also on the float with him were a number of Saints players, throwing beads and joining in the fun. | |
| | Robbins Brothers Promotion Made One Couple’s Dream Come True Mon, February 8th 2010, 10:38 EST | | Robbins Brothers, a Southern California retail jeweler, has come up with some amazing giveaways for this Valentine’s Day. Having recently partnered with Disney and Touchstone Pictures, the chain is running the “Romantic Wishes—‘When in Rome’” sweepstakes through February 14. Couples can submit their “ultimate romantic wishes” on the Robbins Brothers website for a chance to win a private screening of the movie “When in Rome” (starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel), an Amsale wedding dress, or even a trip for two to Rome.
The marketing department also asked all of stores’ salespeople to keep their ears open for couples with amazing or inspiring love stories. Their plan was to find the one ideal couple and invite them to the Hollywood premiere of “When in Rome”, and find one they did. 25-year-olf Navy Seal Chad Williams met Aubrey O’Boyle in line at Space Mountain at Disneyland. Williams was deployed all over the globe, including Iraq, but the couple stayed together despite any distance between them.

| | Saints Win Super Bowl XLIV; Real MVP Is Baylen Brees Mon, February 8th 2010, 05:05 EST | | Miami, FL – Last night, the odds were supposed to be against the New Orleans Saints, expected to lose to the Indianapolis Colts by 5. The Saints knew what people were saying, but they never believed it. They felt, according to Coach Sean Payton, that: “…as underdogs, we had the better team. To be in that position where maybe a lot of people were picking against us, we liked the spot we were in”. And a great spot it was. Overcoming the power of the Colts and a first-quarter deficit, they won the game 31-17, earning themselves their first Super Bowl title, helping to heal a city still reeling from Hurricane Katrina, and forever allowing Saints fans to keep the paper bags off their heads. Getting the Championship title and giant rings encrusted with diamonds was just icing on the cake. “Four years ago, who ever thought this would be happening when 85 percent of the city was underwater from Katrina.” | |
| | “Avatar” Shows Oneness With Environment, Popularizes Natural Jewelry Tue, January 19th 2010, 12:51 EST | | James Cameron’s Avatar does just that. He creates a world in which a human can inhabit the body of a Na’vi, one of the humanoid natives of the Utopian planet Pandora. Scientists mix human DNA with the DNA of a Na’vi, and create what essentially becomes a ‘remote-controlled body’. Initially, when Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) takes on his new 12-foot tall graceful body, he is doing so for a human corporation that wants to gain control of land directly under the homes of the Na’vi, in which the very rare element Unobtanium naturally forms. Unobtanium is said by Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) to be worth between $20 and $40 million per kilogram, or, to put it in terms we can all understand, the approximate value of the same volume of diamonds. Each character is adorned with necklaces made from indigenous plants, stones, and animal skins. They all have some identifying ornamentation, be it a beaded armband or a facial adornment. Their braided hair also holds beads and feathers. They are as much a part of the environment as the environment is part of each of them. There is no place where the Na’vi end and the ecosphere begins. | |
| | Full 2010 Golden Globes Report Mon, January 18th 2010, 04:13 EST | | Last night, British funny man Ricky Gervais hosted the 2010 Golden Globe Awards, and the show was exciting as ever.
Not too surprising, although a bit disappointing, Avatar won Best Picture, beating out Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds and Reitman’s Up In The Air.
The extremely talented and funny Alec Baldwin won a much deserved award Best Actor in a Televsion Series, Comedy or musical for his role on NBC’s hit comedy 30 Rock. Unfortunately, his co-star and series creator, Tina Fay, lost out to United Stares of Tara’s Toni Collette in the actress category.
Tarantino’s brilliant WWII film, Inglorious Basterds, got the short end of the stick, not winning Best Picture or Best Screenplay. However, the incredible Christoph Waltz did win Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his menacing role in Tarantino’s masterpiece.
Michael C. Hall, who recently announced he was battling cancer, won Best Actor in a Television Series, Drama for his role as serial killer/blood spatter analyst on Showtime’s Dexter. He gave a concise, yet moving speech in which he thanked his co-stars, including his wife Jennifer Carpenter. John Lithgow won a much-deserved award for his role as Arthur Mitchell/Trinity Killer in the Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television category for Dexter.
Things were exciting on the Red Carpet as well. Newly engaged Jane Krakowski showed off her gorgeous diamond engagement ring – the first time since getting engaged.
| | 30 Rock’s Jane Krakowski Engaged Thu, January 7th 2010, 03:44 EST | | Many couples become engaged during the holiday season. And what’s good for most is certainly good for one of the most exciting, talented actresses in television today. That’s right… I’m talking about the incomparable Jane Krakowski – co-star of NBC’s great comedy series 30 Rock.
During the holidays, Jane’s boyfriend, clothing designer Robert Godley, gave her the ultimate present – a diamond engagement ring. A rep for Krakowski says “Jane Krakowski and Robert Godley are thrilled to announce that they are engaged to be married. Mr. Godley proposed to Ms. Krakowski over the holidays. She is very, very happy.”
The couple has reportedly been dating for more than a year. No wedding day is currently set. It will be the Tony-winning actress’ first time at the altar.
Goodley is a co-founder of Psycho Bunny upscale menswear. He was born in Kent, England, but grew up in London.
“She is very much in love, and very, very happy,” a friend told Access Hollywood. As for the engagement ring?: “She loves it! It’s beautiful!”
| | Jon Gosselin’s Apartment Burglarized Sun, December 27th 2009, 07:19 EST | | After spending Christmas in Pennsylvania with his eight children, Jon Gosselin returned to his New York apartment to find it had been burglarized.
“[He] called me this afternoon . . . when he entered his apartment in Manhattan and was horrified, disheartened and saddened to observe the devastation of his furniture, clothing and personal belongings, which were apparently slashed with a butcher knife by a very troubled and sick perpetrator,” Jon's lawyer, Mark Jay Heller, said in a statement this past Saturday. “Jon immediately contacted me and facilitated the able assistance of the New York City Police Department who immediately dispatched an experienced detective to Jon’s apartment.”
According to Heller’s statement, Gosselin discovered a note that was “speared” into his wooden dresser. Heller also says that Jon's television, CD player, coffee maker, dishes, pots and pans were stolen from his apartment. Also, much of his clothing, luggage and bedding was slashed. The word “cheater” was carved into the headboard of his bed. Approximately $100,000 worth of damages was done to Jon’s apartment. Good thing he didn't have his diamond earrings lying around.
“The greatest damage from this vicious, mean spirited and heartless crime was perpetrated not on Jon’s property and possessions, but on Jon Gosselin himself, who experienced a traumatic, emotional, roller coast ride having just shared a joyful family gathering with his children during their Christmas,” Heller's statement read.
| | Carrie Underwood Engaged To Mike Fisher Tue, December 22nd 2009, 15:28 EST | | Country music star and former American Idol winner Carrie Underwood is engaged to Ottawa Senator Mike Fisher. Underwood, 26, has been dating Fisher, 29, for more than a year. They were introduced by one of her band members.
Mike popped the question in front of friends and family on Sunday. He texted the exciting news to his close friends soon after.
“He was pretty excited,” said a source. “She's a great gal and I think they're made for each other.”
A wedding date has not yet been set, but it seems as though the couple will exchange wedding rings in the near future. A rep for the couple confirmed the engagement: “I'm happy to confirm that Carrie Underwood is engaged to Mike Fisher, and the couple couldn't be happier. No wedding date has been set at this time.”
Fisher recently discussed his relationship with Underwood on The Sens Show, a web news show run by his team: “Obviously, it's tough with our schedules to see each other, but we find a way to make it work. She doesn't get too many days off — a lot less days off than I get. She's always going. She's talented and she's getting rewarded for it. That's good to see.”
In the liner notes of her newest album Play On, Carrie wrote a sweet sentiment to her man: “Thank you #12. You are the most amazing addition to my life. I thank God for you every day. . . xoxo Carrie.” The #12 refers to Fisher’s jersey number.
| | Jon Gosselin Loses In Court Sun, December 13rd 2009, 15:25 EST | | On Thursday, a Maryland judge ruled that Jon Gosselin must stop making media appearances and endorsements that breach his TLC contract. For example, the celebrity dad recently hosted a Las Vegas pool party. This was illegal according to his contract.
Montgomery County Circuit Judge Michael D. Mason granted TLC a preliminary injunction, pending the outcome of an April 19 trial.
Mark Heller, Gosselin's lawyer, said he was confident Gosselin would eventually win the case. He also suggested that TLC should be anxious to settle so they can resume their hit reality show “Jon & Kate Plus 8, which ended recently due to legal dispute and the Gosselins' pending divorce. The couple exchanged wedding rings in 1999.
“Jon Gosselin holds the key to the 'Jon & Kate Plus 8' brand,” said Heller.
Gosselin's lawyers claim the contract allows certain media appearances, but the judge said that wasn't how he interpreted the contract.
TLC Chief Operating Officer Edward Sabin testified that Gosselin has made many media appearances and endorsements that are not permitted in the contract. He also complained that Gosselin drank alcohol and hung out with women in public – actions that go against the wholesome image of the show. He also said that the public statements Gosselin made about the show and the network were embarrassing.
In particular, Sabin mentioned the Las Vegas pool party that Gosselin hosted at the MGM Grand Hotel. “What we wanted to avoid was exactly what happened. The next day in the tabloids were photos of Mr. Gosselin surrounded by bikini-clad women,” Sabin lamented.
| | Tom Brady and Gisele Welcome a Baby Boy Thu, December 10th 2009, 06:05 EST | | New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bundchen have welcomed a baby boy. Brady announced the boy was born Tuesday and that he and his wife have not yet chosen a name. He said it was “a wonderful experience in my life.” He added: “Everyone's great. I didn't get much sleep.”
Brady also has a 2-year-old son, Jack, with actress Bridget Moynahan. Gisele is a first-time mother.
Brady and Bundchen exchanged wedding rings during a small ceremony in Los Angeles this past February. In April, they held another wedding ceremony in Costa Rica for friends and family.
On Wednesday, Brady showed up 16 minutes late for his weekly media availability. The Patriots have lost three of their last four games and their record has dropped to 7-5 as a result. They lead the AFC East by one game and play at home Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
Brady said it was important for him to come to work Wednesday. “I owe it to the guys in the locker room to really focus on what I need to do for this team and put all these emotions aside and kind of come in here with a great sense of determination on what we have to do as a team. So, as a captain and a leader of this team, the last thing they need from me is to be really not focused on the job at hand. There's plenty of things for me to really be doing here this week.”
