The Vinci Diamond Cut Based on DaVinci`s Golden RatioFri, April 21st 2006, 07:12 EST | |
| There`s the book. Next is the movie. But move over... Leonardo DaVinci has now inspired a new cut of diamond. It`s called The Vinci Diamond, a 62-facet pentacle cut incorporating the precise ratios of the Golden Ratio, otherwise known as the Divine Proportion. The diamond is designed by Israeli diamond designer Shlomo Cohen, also credited with developing the Princess Cut in 1982. “I have been studying the geometric possibilities offered by the Golden Ratio since 2001,” Cohen explains. “Interestingly, like Dan Brown, I was inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s study of the human body, the Vitruvian Man, and discovered that the artist had adopted the Golden Ratio to emphasize the understanding that symmetry denotes beauty. I set out to create The Vinci Diamond on the assumption that it would be aesthetically more pleasing if it conforms to the ratios of the Golden Ratio.” The Golden Ratio is based on the relationship of three lines and is considered divine as it is repeated again and again in nature. The figure used is 1.618 and the relationship shows the longest line as twice the length of the 2nd longest, which is twice the length of the shortest line. You`ll see this relationship in the ratio of forearm to hand and in each section of the index finger. It was also used in the construction of the pyramids, the building of the Sun Pyramid at Teotihuacan and in the construction of the Parthenon in Athens. Cohen`s Vinci Diamond has three pentacle shapes where the distance of the central segment of each diagonal is related to the distance of either of the outer segments by a multiple of 1.618. The preciseness of symmetry in the Vinci Diamond reflects both fire and brilliance surpassing that of the standard 57-facet round cut diamond. The Vinci Diamond is patented in the United States, Japan, Israel, and Belgium.
