The Christie`s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York raised $39 million. Among the top ten items sold were pieces from the estate of Joan B. Kroc, wife of McDonald`s founder Ray Kroc. The most expensive item purchased at the auction was a pear-shaped D/IF diamond of 50.53 carats for $4.216 million or $83,450 per carat. Wow! Another impressive sale was a fancy intense yellow, VS1 diamond pendant necklace of 42.13 carats from the Joan B. Kroc collection and designed by Harry Winston. This piece was estimated to sell for $1-1.5 million, but actually brought $2,032,000 from a private European buyer. Also sold was a 14.43ct fancy dark blue-grey VVS1 diamond (see picture) for a cool $1,472,000. "A staggering $39 million changed hands at Christie`s New York today. The combination of a strong economy, coupled with buyers from emerging markets, drove the prices of this auction to a whole new level. Diamonds continue to soar and rare jewels and gemstones have gained tremendous ground in the market," said the head of jewelry for Christie`s Americas, Rahul Kadakia.
