One jewelry store owner in the U.S. stated that he has seen a big increase in female buyers in the last two years. These women seem to be buying for fashion, not so much for an occasion, he said. This could be due to the evolution of feminism from the 1960s. Ladies today tend to get married because they want to share their lives, not because they need to be taken care of. This means that more women have their own careers and have the money to buy diamonds and other jewels for themselves. Surveys show that 85-90% of diamond and jewelry purchases are made by women. Also, women are wearing jewelry more on a daily basis as a fashion statement, something that they bought for themselves. Gone are the days when women waited for a gift. According to the Professional Jeweler Magazine, women buy 90% of all silver jewelry in the U.S., 30% of all platinum and 60% of all gold. Most purchase are in the $300-1500 range.
