New York, NY – After unwittingly flashing her underwear at the London Premier of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”, Emma Watson opted for less flowy attire for the movie’s New York opening. After laughing off the ‘wardrobe malfunction’ in London, saying “At least I was wearing underwear”, Watson chose a look straight off the runway this past Friday. The black leather halter top and white pencil skirt were designed by Proenza Schouler. Watson complemented the outfit with hoop diamond earrings and an emerald ring on her right index finger. Throughout the filming of the Harry Potter series, the cast has literally grown up in front of us. While the first movie, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, was released in 2001 when the actors were all kids, the latest film shows us not only more grown-up characters, but actors as well. Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson are now both 19, and Rupert Grint is 20. They are now veterans at their craft, showing the confidence that comes with being the feature players in one of Hollywood’s most popular—and lucrative—movie franchises. The last book will be shot as two movies, to be released in 2010 and 2011. After that, each of the principal actors could retire if they wanted to. But each of them has done other projects between films. Daniel Radcliffe famously bared all in the Broadway play “Equus”. Rupert Grint has done several movies, the latest of which, called “Wild Target”, also stars Emily Blunt and Rupert Everett. And Emma Watson, in between developing a friendship with designer Karl Lagerfeld and becoming the newest face of Burberry, has managed to mimic Hermione Granger’s knack for learning, and plans to attend Columbia University this fall. Producer David Heyman has said that, in the beginning of the series, Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint were “doing what they were told. Now they’ve had experience…I’ve seen their interests beyond “Potter” flourish. Emma got the highest grade in English A-level in the country. She’s blossomed into a true beauty and she’s fiercely intelligent. Rupert is a true eccentric…Dan is one of these voracious inquirers of information and knowledge…Emma is involved in fashion. She’s modeling. Rupert is just a natural comedian.” It seems that, even after the last frame of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is shot, these actors will go on to have successful careers at whatever they choose. And they will forever be able to pick only the projects that interest them.
