After a far-too-long hiatus during which she gave birth to the stunning offspring of model Gabriel Aubry, Halle Berry is returning to the big screen to star in a biopic about notorious international diamond jewel thief Doris Payne. According to MSNBC, “When Doris Payne went to work, she stepped into her fancy dress, high heels and donned a wide-brimmed hat. Her creamy, mocha skin was made up just so, her handbag always designer…she looked immaculate, well-to-do”. Although stories about diamond jewel thefts are all over the news, few of them lack the style and grace with which Doris Payne carried out her work. She was not into smash-and-grabs, or threatening with weapons, or elaborate plans. Doris Payne would go into upscale jewelers and ask to try on various expensive diamond earrings and diamond rings. She would try on one thing after another after another until the salesperson simply lost track, all the while telling stories and being friendly, and then she would simply leave the store either wearing or carrying very expensive diamond jewelry. Often, no one knew what she had done until long after she was gone--with her new diamond booty. The now 75 year-old Payne laughs at her former vocation, although she is laughing from a prison cell in Las Vegas after getting caught stealing a $36,000 marquis-cut 2.48-carat diamond ring from Neiman Marcus. Prior to that, she successfully stole expensive diamond jewellery from some of the finest jewelers in New York, Nevada, California, and Colorado, as well as Greece, England, Switzerland and France. For over 50 years she made her living as a jewel thief. And she always worked alone. Now, her story has been made into a screenplay called “Who Is Doris Payne?” And this is the script that has drawn Halle Berry back into the spotlight to play the title role. The story of Payne’s life—and life of crime—was intriguing to the actress. It is certainly not the story of a woman forced into crime because of an abusive husband or some other tragic back-story. She was simply a jewel thief: she liked diamonds, and she liked her work. It allowed her to travel and have nice things, to live as she wanted to--with excitement and thrills. Now that Halle Berry has signed on to play Doris Payne, one of the most notorious yet charming diamond thieves in history, there is no doubt that the movie will do well, and a story that might never have been told will reach nearly everyone.
