Gold Jewelry Discovered in Egyptian TombWed, March 11st 2009, 05:15 EST | |
| Cairo, Egypt Archeologists have discovered gold jewelry in the tomb of a senior official who lived under Queen Hatshepsut 3,500 years ago. The treasures were discovered by a Spanish team who have been digging at a site on the west bank of the Nile River in Luxor, Egypt. Luxor is one of the biggest tourist sites in Egypt, due to the fact that it hosts the tombs of many Pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. A statement released by the Egyptian Culture Ministry stated that the gold jewelry was found in a newly discovered burial chamber in the tomb of Djehuty, a senior treasury official who worked under Queen Hatshepsut. The gold jewelry included five gold earrings and two gold rings. The newly discovered chamber is painted with texts from the Egyption Book of the Dead and the ceiling has a mural of the goddess Nut. Jose Galan of Madrid’s National Research Center and his team have been excavating at the site in Dra Abu El-Naga since 2002, but only discovered the new burial chamber with the gold jewelry this year.
