According to an eBay India census, diamonds are the most popular online purchase for the average buyer in Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. The survey covered all the Indian states and territories during the 2007 calendar year. Mumbai ranked first in terms of number of people conducting eBay transactions, followed by Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Chennai. In Mumbai, diamonds were the top product to be bought and sold. After diamonds, the average buyer was most likely to purchase value handsets, MP4 players, and USB MP3 players. The average seller was most likely to sell value handsets, USB MP3 players, and Indian stamps. The top eBay purchase for citizens of Delhi is Indian stamps – but diamonds came in at a close second. The stamps also topped Delhi’s most-sold list, followed by materials relating to education and textbooks, women’s apparel, FM radios, and USB drives. Diamonds also ranked high on Kolkata’s list: topping out at number one for most-bought product (followed by Indian stamps), and number two for most sold, after USB MP3 players. The eBay census is the first of its kind, and was designed to shed light on the different online purchasing habits in the various regions of India.
