De Beers stated last week that there is much uncertainty regarding market conditions for diamond demand. Economic conditions in the U.S. could have an effect on consumer diamond jewelry sales throughout the year.
It appears however that emerging markets in China and India could help to maintain steady prices for larger and better-quality diamonds.
De Beers stated that it intends to make diamonds at levels similar to 2007 and 2006. However, energy problems in southern Africa could cause what it termed as “operational challenges.”
