In Cape Town, South Africa, the country’s elite crime-fighting unit, the Scorpions, is probing allegations of fraud in connection with what has been termed “the world’s biggest diamond,” which allegedly was found on Aug. 27 on a farm there. It was initially reported that the diamond was twice the size of the world’s largest to date, which is the Cullinan Diamond, found in 1905 and weighing 3,106 carats. After the new diamond was reported found, it was determined that those who reported it were businesspeople with a history of fraud in similar scams. A photo was released of the alleged new diamond, but it was only a low-resolution image of a green gem. President of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses Ernest Blom said that he would verify the stone. He asked to see documents about the ownership of the stone and mine. He asked for documentation several times but never received anything.
