Wimbledon, London, England -- When Serena Williams took the court for the Wimbledon Final on Saturday, she was not facing just any opponent. But she had to tell herself it was just another hard-hitting player standing in between her and her 3rd Wimbledon title and 15th Grand Slam Championship. Serena was ranked #2 on Monday, below Dinara Safina. It was the #3 seed—and Serena’s sister—who took Safina out of the picture in the semifinals. Then it was Serena Williams against Venus Williams at Centre Court in the Championship. Serena took the match 7-6, 6-2, defeating her own sister but nonetheless receiving a warm congratulatory hug from her. “I didn’t think about Venus at all today. I just saw her as an opponent,” Serena told reporters. “At one point, after the first set, I looked on the side of the court at the stats, and it was like ‘Williams’, ‘Williams’. I couldn’t figure out which was which.” The sisters are known to be fairly equally matched on grass courts, maintaining both power and the ability to cover the span of the court, but it was Serena’s time to shine. But the pair won the Doubles title as a team less than four hours after they were opponents. It seems only possible with sisters. It is what makes the Williams sisters impossible to not watch. Last year, at a Wimbledon pre-party, Serena was seen endlessly fidgeting with her hair clips. She later admitted it was because they were made with real diamonds, and she didn’t want to risk losing them in the grass. This year, she needn’t worry. After winning the title, the famous silver and gold “Venus Rosewater Dish”, and about $1.25 million in prize money, Serena Williams can stop worrying about losing a diamond hair clip. She can get herself as many as she wants. Next up is the #6-ranked American Andy Roddick against #2-ranked Swiss Roger Federer, scheduled for today.
