Jewels Donated to India’s National MuseumTue, May 1st 2007, 03:46 EST | |
| King Abdullah Abdal Aziz of Saudi Arabia visited India as the guest of honor on the Republic Day, and came bearing gifts. He adorned both the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi with beautiful precious jewels. The two have decided to donate their gifts to the National Museum to be displayed in its galleries in the weeks to come. The jewelry given to the Congress president is comprised of a grand emerald-diamond necklace, earrings, and a ring. This set has already reached the museum and will be put on display as soon as the other set arrives. “Gifts left behind by dignitaries assume historical significance down the years,” said a museum source. The museum already has a number of objects that compile its “modern acquisitions,” which begin in the Nehruvian era. The sets have not been valued because they were received as gifts. - written by Sarah Baltic -
