Flawless Diamonds Are The Future Of MedicineFlawless Diamonds Are The Future Of Medicine
Sun, March 21st 2010, 21:41 EST
Scientists at Argonne National Laboratory are using the most amazing diamonds in the world to create a potent X-ray laser that will illuminate small and complex materials on Earth that may lead to new drugs and medical treatments. “Everything around us can be studied with X-ray lasers,” said Yuri V. Shvyd'ko, a scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. “The only way we can see to build the next generation of X-ray lasers is by using diamond crystals.” Scientists use X-ray lasers for many experiments in many disciplines, including biology, physics and chemistry. Most lasers work by bouncing a wavelength of light back and forth between two mirrors. A mirror made of diamond would reflect all X-rays. The only snag is that it would require a flawless diamond. The diamond the Argonne scientists used wasn't completely flawless, but it was close enough. “This is a huge milestone in this type of laser research,” said Stephen Durbin, a scientist at Purdue University who wrote an accompanying article in Nature Physics about the diamond mirror. “This is a situation where people are extremely anxious to do a long list of very important experiments,” said Durbin.
Gang Holds Diamond Family HostageGang Holds Diamond Family Hostage
Sun, March 7th 2010, 09:07 EST
This past Friday wasn’t so great for Karp Impex, an India-based diamond manufacturer with offices in Antwerp. The office was the sight of one of the biggest robberies in Belgium. The family of Pankaj Maldar – a partner as Karp Impex – was held at gun point at their home by a gang of thieves demanding diamonds from the company’s office. The gang came into the home with full knowledge of Karp Impex’s inventory, and demanded that Maldar get the diamonds while his family was held hostage. Reports suggest that the robbers made away with diamonds valued up to $10 million. The family was held hostage for 18 hours. Vasant Mehta, chairman of India’s Gem & Jewelry Export Promotion Center said: “Antwerp used to be a safe place to do business but this should serve as a wakeup call for the city,” He argued that the robbery wasn’t aimed specifically at the Indian company, claiming that “it could have been anyone.”
The 4 Million Dollar Diamond Heist The 4 Million Dollar Diamond Heist
Wed, February 24th 2010, 06:25 EST
Two Diamond District wholesalers were arrested yesterday in connection with a 2008 $4 million diamond jewelry heist. The two alleged robbers were disguised as Hasidic Jews during the holdup. If this seems familiar to you, it should… it is very similar setup to Guy Richie’s film Snatch. Atul Shah, 48, and Mahaveer Kankariya, 43, were charged with grand larceny, insurance fraud and falsifying business records for a staged gunpoint robbery at their Midtown store on New Years Eve in 2008. According to Law enforcement sources, enhanced video surveillance footage shows the pair stealing the jewelry before the fake. “The whole thing was set up,” said a source. The fake robbery took place during the daytime on December 31, 2008. The robbers wore typical Orthodox garb – black coats, hats and beards – and flashed fake ID’s to get inside the building. After they were buzzed into the store, the pair drew guns and held up Shah and another employee.
Lil Wayne Needs Dental Work Before Jail Lil Wayne Needs Dental Work Before Jail
Wed, February 10th 2010, 07:26 EST
Looks like rapper Lil Wayne caught a break… sort of. The wordsmith’s sentencing in a weapons charge was postponed on Tuesday so he could have dental surgery before going to jail. As it now stands, Lil wayne is due for sentencing on March 2. His plea calls for a 1 year prison term in city jail. On the condition of good behavior, Lil Wayne could only have to face 8 months. As for the postponed hearing… Defense lawyer Stacey Richman said her client was headed home to Miami for dental work scheduled for Friday. She declined to comment on the specific nature of the problem. “It is a medical situation that, like (it would for) any of us, has to be addressed,” she stated outside of court. She added that Lil Wayne would have taken care of the problem sooner, but his dentist had been out of the country. The rapper once bragged to Jimmy Kimmel that his diamond encrusted teeth cost him $150,000. Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon didn't argue with Lil Wayne’s request to push back his sentencing, saying she had spoken to the dentist. Lil Wayne, 27, pled guilty in October to criminal possession of a weapon - admitting he illegally had a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun on his tour bus in July 2007. Police found the weapon when they stopped the bus after a Manhattan concert.
Howard Stern To Host American Idol?Howard Stern To Host American Idol?
Sun, February 7th 2010, 07:53 EST
With Simon Cowell officially set to leave American Idol at the end of this season, producers are looking to replace him with someone worthwhile, someone like Howard Stern – the self-professed “King of All Media.” According to an insider, producers of American Idol say Stern is their first choice to replace Cowell. They approached Howard after he repeatedly mentioned on-air that his exclusive contract with Sirius XM Radio expires next January and that he was open to potential offers. Cowell was paid $50 million a year. A source connected to American Idol said “It's one of the few shows that could compete with Stern's $100 million-a-year Sirius contract, and 'Idol' bosses think he'd be even nastier than Simon. They know he would be great TV and would clash with the other judges such as Ellen DeGeneres and the contestants. 'Idol' will do what it takes to sign him.” However, according to a different source, Howard Stern isn’t quite ready to make the leap: “Despite what he's been saying on-air, Howard isn't ready to leave radio and would like to stay on at Sirius. We believe this is a ploy to make Sirius pay up and keep him on his huge contract. But if Sirius can't pay him the money he wants, he may negotiate to film 'Idol' on the side.”
The 2010 Best Picture Oscar NominationsThe 2010 Best Picture Oscar Nominations
Wed, February 3rd 2010, 16:17 EST
This year’s Oscar Award Show is going to be a different affair. Instead of just 5 movies nominated for Best Picture, that figure has doubled, and the nominations are all interesting. Avatar, which has already made history by earning more than any other movie, and The Hurt Locker, one of the lowest-grossing Oscar nominees, are set to battle it out this year with an impressive 9 nominations apiece. What makes this competition even more interesting is that James Cameron (the director of Avatar) and Kathryn Bigelow (the director of The Hurt Locker) used to be husband and wife. Yup… they exchanged wedding rings over 20 years ago. However, the ex-couple are now friends, so don’t expect to much bullying and animosity. Thus far, Avatar won Best Drama and Best Director at the Golden Globes. The Hurt Locker earned top prizes from guilds representing directors and producers, and was chosen as best film of the year by many important critics. Upon accepting his Golden Globe, Cameron said: “Frankly, I thought Kathryn was going to get this. She richly deserves it.” "It's a true David and Goliath kind of story, isn't it?" said Jeremy Renner, a best-actor nominee for his performance in The Hurt Locker.
Rip Torn Charged With Breaking Into BankActor Rip Torn Charged With Breaking Into Bank
Sun, January 31st 2010, 06:23 EST
Veteran actor Elmore “Rip” Torn has been charged with breaking into a Connecticut bank and carrying a loaded handgun while intoxicated. According to state police, the 78-year-old actor was arrested Friday night when police found him inside the Litchfield Bancorp with a loaded gun. Torn, who is a Salisbury resident, has been taken into custody and booked on several charges, including burglary and possession of a firearm without a permit. He is currently being held on a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Bantam Superior Court on Monday. This is not the first alcohol-fueled incident for Torn. Last year he was given probation in a Connecticut drunken driving case and was permitted to enter an alcohol education program. Prior to that arrest, Torn had two drunken driving arrests in New York. Rip Torn has starred in many films and television shows, including Freddy Got Fingered, Men in Black, The Larry Sanders Show and, most recently, 30 Rock.
Avatar Breaks Overseas Box Office RecordAvatar Breaks Overseas Box Office Record

Looks like James Cameron has done it again. After six rounds on the foreign circuit, Avatar has become the biggest grossing overseas movie in history – surpassing Cameron’s own Titanic. So far, Cameron’s huge-budget blockbuster has grossed $1.288 billion. Titanic held the record for 13 years, grossing $1.242. That means Avatar sunk Titanic by $46 million – that’s a lot of money. Maybe Cameron will upgrade the diamond jewelry worn by the Na’vi in the imminent Avatar sequel. Avatar’s most recent No. 1 weekend gross was $107 million – that’s from 11,800 screens in 111 markets. It was the sixth consecutive week that Avatar earned more than $100 million in the foreign circuit. Here is a breakdown of the figures: France - $123.3 million Germany - $95.7 million U.K. - $92.9 million South Korea - $79.5 million Japan - $77.7 million Australia - $77.1 million Spain - $76 million
Michael C. Hall Feeling Much Better After Winning AwardsMichael C. Hall Feeling Much Better After Winning Awards
Mon, January 25th 2010, 08:33 EST
Michael C. Hall - the actor who plays serial killer/blood splatter analyst Dexter Morgan on Showtime’s hit show Dexter – recently revealed he has being treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer. Just last week, Hall won a Golden Globe for his outstanding performance on Dexter, and this week he was name outstanding actor in a drama series at Saturday’s Screen Actor’s Guild Awards. Celebrating his wins, Michael told the press: “I'm two-thirds of the way through this treatment that already has this thing in remission. It's nice in the homestretch to have this kind of shock of positive energy. It's a celebration.” The 38 year old actor is known to be a very private individual. He initially revealed he had cancer because he knew he would be making several public appearances in the near future: “Because award shows were imminent, I had to make a statement,” he said at last week's Golden Globes.
Style Shines Bright At The 2010 SAG AwardsStyle Shines Bright At The 2010 SAG Awards
Sun, January 24th 2010, 07:43 EST
The 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards was truly an event to remember. The stars came out and shone brighter than the moon in their glamorous gowns and dazzling diamonds. From Lea Michele’s beautiful emerald green Malandrino gown to Diane Kruger’s yellow Jason Wu dress, fashion was the real star at the Hollywood award show. Drew Barrymore – who already made quite a statement of style at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year – wore a strapless royal blue Monique Lhuillier gown trimmed with ribbons and beads. Kate Hudson looking very pretty in her Emilio Pucci gown with it’s modest front and low-cut back. The matching necklace she wore added an extra flash. Gorgeous Marion Cotillard looked stunning as ever in a short cocktail dress. The Elie Saab Couture dress was decorated in beads and floral embroidery. Penelope Cruz dazzled in her L’Wren Scott designer dress, covered in black beads with black beaded fringes at the shoulders. In terms of jewelry, the stars chose to keep a modest approach, sporting only one or two pieces. Most of the jewelry appeared to be platinum or diamonds. Here’s a rundown on the winners: Best Actor in a Film went to Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart and Best Actress went to Sandra Bullock for her role in The Blind Side.
