On Sunday night, Venezuelan beauty Stephania Fernandez was crowned Miss Universe 2009. This is her country’s second consecutive win and it’s sixth overall win in the pageant.
The 18-year-old brunette defeated favorites from Australia and Dominican Republic to become the 58th winner of the diamond crown. The show was broadcast live around the world from the Atlantis, Paradise Island resort in the Bahamas.
Dressed in a flowing red gown, Stefania Fernandez hugged the runner-up from the Dominican Republic and danced in joy when she was announced as the victor.
After the pageant, Fernandez tried to give insight regarding her country’s Miss Universe success: “What do we Venezuelans have?” she mused. “That we are ourselves.”
During the Q and A segment, Fernandez said she believed women have overcome obstacles such as hitting the “glass ceiling.” “I feel we have reached the level that men are at,” she remarked.

Model and actress Milla Jovovich exchanged wedding rings with director Paul W. S. Anderson yesterday in an intimate sunset ceremony at the couple’s Beverly Hills home.
The 33-year-old bride wore a self-designed 60s-style mini-dress and the groom wore a beige suit. After exchanging vows, the pair exchanged matching Neil Lane classic gold wedding bands. Mila’s engagement ring has been described as a “19th century vintage gold engagement ring with colored pink, yellow, and white diamonds.”
The newlyweds’ home was decorated with white and red floral arrangements that matched their Spanish-style house. Guests were treated to cocktails and serenaded by traditional Spanish music played by a guitarist and singer.
The event was small and intimate with only 50 guests present. Among the invites was ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Patrick Dempsey and is wife Jillian. Jovovich and Anderson’s 20-month-old daughter, Ever Gabo, was also in attendance.
How far would you go for love? For a New Zealand local the answer was ‘very far’. After dropping his wedding ring to the bottom of Wellington Harbor, Aleki Taumoepeau, swore to his new bride that he would retrieve the sunken treasure… that was 16 months ago.
The NIWA ecologist was scouring the harbor for invasive plant species last March when the ring slipped from his finger. He quickly threw an anchor overboard in an attempt to mark the loose whereabouts of the band. He swore to his wife of three months, Rachel, that he would find the token of their bliss.
Describing the incident, Rachel said “It flew off into the air and everyone on the boat was looking at it and said it was like a scene from Lord of the Rings in slow motion.”
Three months after the incident Aleki Taumoepeau was on the hunt for the ring, but the quest proved to be unsuccessful. Thankfully, Aleki was back on the scene recently for another attempt.
It was announced yesterday morning that pop diva Celine Dion is pregnant.
The French-Canadian chanteuse exchanged wedding rings with long time beau Rene Angelil on Dec 17, 1994. The couple’s first child, Rene-Charles, was born in January of 2001.
Angelil already has three other children from two prior marriages.
A rep for the couple has confirmed the pregnancy, stating “Celine and Rene are very happy. They are crazy in love over the news… they are overjoyed.”
The 41-year-old singer of ‘My Heart Will Go On’ found out the news herself only this Monday, after she and her 67-year-old husband conceived with the assistance of a team of fertility doctors in New York. The spouses’ first child was born by cesarean, after 6 years of fertility clinic treatments.
The pregnancy news follows the end of Ms. Dion's recent Taking Chances world tour, which reportedly grossed $273-million.
The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, passed away on July 25 due to cardiac arrest, but has still yet to officially be buried. Well, the time has come. Jackson’s father, Joe Jackson, has declared that his son’s body will be buried at a Los Angeles cemetery on August 29 – what would have been his 51st birthday.
Since the pop star’s passing, there has been a frenzy surrounding anything and everything Jacko related, including reports that Jackson’s hair will be turned into diamonds by Chicago-based jeweler LifeGem.
Last week, media reports claimed that the Thriller singer’s body was buried in a private ceremony early this month. However, those reports were given by unnamed sources and were never confirmed by Jackson’s family.
So far a Jackson family spokesman has not provided any comments regarding Joe Jackson’s statement, nor has a spokesman at Los Angeles’ Forest Lawn cemetery, when Michael is supposedly set to buried.
In July, a public memorial for the singer was held, but it was never confirmed that he was buried after the event.
Last Thursday, around 6 p.m., police arrived to the Gosselin family home in Wernersville, Pa. to calm down a verbal dispute between the estranged couple who exchanged wedding rings over a decade ago. According to sources, it was Kate Gosselin who made the phone call to the police.
Last Monday, Kate appeared on The Today Show and told host Meredith Viera that she still loves “the Jon I knew,” despite the fact that the stars of TLC’s reality-series, ‘Kate & Jon Plus 8’, are heading for a divorce.
According to an officer’s statement made to PEOPLE: “[Police] got there and calmed the situation down. No one was arrested and no citations were issued.”
According to another source, Kate called the house to see which babysitter was assisting with the children. A heated argument followed when Kate disapproved the chosen caretaker. However, “due to the custody agreement, Kate couldn't enter the property," the source says. “The cops had no choice but to tell Kate she couldn't go past the gate.”
Alyssa Milano, the 36-year-old former star of ‘Charmed’, exchanged wedding rings with talent agent David Bugliari at his family’s estate in New Jersey on Saturday.
Alyssa Milano best known for her roles in ‘Who’s The Boss’ and ‘Charmed’, is set to star in ABC’s new comedy, ‘Romantically Challenged’.
Milano wore a custom gown by Vera Wang and held a bouquet of lily of the valley flowers as she walked down an aisle to the tune of John Lennon's ‘Imagine’.
The couple exchanged traditional vows under a gazebo decorated with willow, calla lilies and roses. Bradley Cooper of ‘The Hangover’ and ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’, a friend of the groom, was in attendance.
If the death of Michael Jackson hasn’t sparked enough outrageous spectacles, here’s another one: an American firm plans to create diamonds from a lock of the King of Pop’s hair.
LifeGem, the company set to immortalize Jacko’s locks, specializes in converting DNA into diamonds. The company claims to possess a lock of the Thriller singer’s hair from when it accidentally caught fire on the set of filming a Pepsi commercial in 1984.
Supposedly, Ralph Cohen, the executive producer of the Pepsi video shoot, collected some of the charred strands of Jackson’s hair and put them in his pocket while Jackson was being rushed off to the hospital. He kept it for 25 years before selling it to John Reznikoff, who has built a collection of hair from famous people including Marilyn Monroe, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy.
In what’s being hailed as Britain’s biggest jewel heist, two gunmen casually strolled into Graff Jewelers in Mayfair, an upscale London store, and stole gems worth £40million.
The robbers struck at 4.20pm, on Thursday, after convincing a security guard to let them in. They then drew handguns before stealing 43 pieces of jeweler in less than two minutes. Their pillage included diamond earrings and a platinum white diamond ring.
The burglars were captured on CCTV before firing two shots and escaping. They then jumped into a blue BMW which was parked close and smashed into a taxi a minute later.
The crooks got out and fired a second shot, forcing pedestrians to take flight and then got into a Mercedes Benz and sped away.

Hosted by The Jonas Brothers, Joe, Kevin and Nick, The Teen Choice Awards honor celebrities in TV, film, music and sports, as selected by over 83 million online votes.
Kevin Jonas, who recently gave girlfriend Danielle Deleasa an engagement ring, had more reason to celebrate, as he and his brothers took home 5 awards, including choice male red carpet icons. The siblings performed at the start of the ceremony and completed fan-submitted dares throughout the program.
