| Actor Rip Torn Charged With Breaking Into Bank Sun, January 31st 2010, 06:23 EST | | Veteran actor Elmore “Rip” Torn has been charged with breaking into a Connecticut bank and carrying a loaded handgun while intoxicated. According to state police, the 78-year-old actor was arrested Friday night when police found him inside the Litchfield Bancorp with a loaded gun.
Torn, who is a Salisbury resident, has been taken into custody and booked on several charges, including burglary and possession of a firearm without a permit. He is currently being held on a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Bantam Superior Court on Monday.
This is not the first alcohol-fueled incident for Torn. Last year he was given probation in a Connecticut drunken driving case and was permitted to enter an alcohol education program. Prior to that arrest, Torn had two drunken driving arrests in New York.
Rip Torn has starred in many films and television shows, including Freddy Got Fingered, Men in Black, The Larry Sanders Show and, most recently, 30 Rock.

| | Avatar Breaks Overseas Box Office Record Tue, January 26th 2010, 18:13 EST | | Looks like James Cameron has done it again. After six rounds on the foreign circuit, Avatar has become the biggest grossing overseas movie in history – surpassing Cameron’s own Titanic.
So far, Cameron’s huge-budget blockbuster has grossed $1.288 billion. Titanic held the record for 13 years, grossing $1.242. That means Avatar sunk Titanic by $46 million – that’s a lot of money. Maybe Cameron will upgrade the diamond jewelry worn by the Na’vi in the imminent Avatar sequel.
Avatar’s most recent No. 1 weekend gross was $107 million – that’s from 11,800 screens in 111 markets. It was the sixth consecutive week that Avatar earned more than $100 million in the foreign circuit.
Here is a breakdown of the figures:
France - $123.3 million
Germany - $95.7 million
U.K. - $92.9 million
South Korea - $79.5 million
Japan - $77.7 million
Australia - $77.1 million
Spain - $76 million | |
| | Michael C. Hall Feeling Much Better After Winning Awards Mon, January 25th 2010, 08:33 EST | | Michael C. Hall - the actor who plays serial killer/blood splatter analyst Dexter Morgan on Showtime’s hit show Dexter – recently revealed he has being treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer.
Just last week, Hall won a Golden Globe for his outstanding performance on Dexter, and this week he was name outstanding actor in a drama series at Saturday’s Screen Actor’s Guild Awards.
Celebrating his wins, Michael told the press: “I'm two-thirds of the way through this treatment that already has this thing in remission. It's nice in the homestretch to have this kind of shock of positive energy. It's a celebration.”
The 38 year old actor is known to be a very private individual. He initially revealed he had cancer because he knew he would be making several public appearances in the near future: “Because award shows were imminent, I had to make a statement,” he said at last week's Golden Globes.

| | Style Shines Bright At The 2010 SAG Awards Sun, January 24th 2010, 07:43 EST | | The 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards was truly an event to remember. The stars came out and shone brighter than the moon in their glamorous gowns and dazzling diamonds.
From Lea Michele’s beautiful emerald green Malandrino gown to Diane Kruger’s yellow Jason Wu dress, fashion was the real star at the Hollywood award show.
Drew Barrymore – who already made quite a statement of style at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year – wore a strapless royal blue Monique Lhuillier gown trimmed with ribbons and beads.
Kate Hudson looking very pretty in her Emilio Pucci gown with it’s modest front and low-cut back. The matching necklace she wore added an extra flash.
Gorgeous Marion Cotillard looked stunning as ever in a short cocktail dress. The Elie Saab Couture dress was decorated in beads and floral embroidery.
Penelope Cruz dazzled in her L’Wren Scott designer dress, covered in black beads with black beaded fringes at the shoulders.
In terms of jewelry, the stars chose to keep a modest approach, sporting only one or two pieces. Most of the jewelry appeared to be platinum or diamonds.
Here’s a rundown on the winners:
Best Actor in a Film went to Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart and Best Actress went to Sandra Bullock for her role in The Blind Side.

| | Avatar Jewelry Expresses Inner Nature of Each Character Thu, January 21st 2010, 06:20 EST | | When James Cameron began creating the world of Pandora and its inhabitants, the Na’vi, he knew exactly what he was doing. He was giving the world a new way to see movies, to feel what the characters are feeling, to become a part of the world portrayed, and to aspire to be like the heroes of the film. Avatar, as a movie, left each viewer with some profound feeling. We wanted to be Jake or Neytiri. We wanted to be moral and good and fierce and loving. In the Avatar movie, each character’s place in society is displayed by the jewelry and clothing that he or she wears. Their inner selves are outwardly exhibited in their individual ornamentation. As we aspire to be like these characters, we emulate their mannerisms, their styles, their clothing. Avatar jewelry is already a sensation, and will continue to be so as we learn, as the Na’vi know, to express ourselves openly and without shame. Each of the Na’vi has a super-natural appearance not because of their blue skin and long limbs, but because underneath their skin are displays of light, glimmering like diamonds, points of illumination. No two members of the clan have the same markings. They are, collectively, ethereal beings. Individually, each expresses this differently. | |
| | The Strange Case Of Dennis Hopper’s Divorce Wed, January 20th 2010, 06:30 EST | | It’s no secret that actor Dennis Hopper is dying from cancer and reportedly only has weeks to live. Not to mention, he is in a highly medicated state. So, it makes sense that his recent divorce shocker may not be exactly what it seems.
Last Thursday, Hopper filed for divorce from his Victoria – his wife of 14 years, and the mother of his 6-year-old daughter Galen. The divorce came as a huge shock considering Hopper’s state, and his long marriage to Victoria. Well, a family confidant tells the Huffington Post that Dennis’ daughter Marin is responsible and is trying to squeeze more money from her father’s estate.
“It's so horrible, Dennis is at home, Victoria and Galen are living there as well, and Marin is pulling her father out of his bed and driving him to the divorce lawyers. The poor guy has no idea what is going on. Even his lawyers are telling people he is on painkillers and is essentially sleeping all the time,” a friend told Huffington Post.
Hopper filed the divorce papers despite the fact that his lawyers wouldn’t let him sign any other paperwork at the time due to his mental state. He is reportedly delirious and having trouble speaking.
Marin supposedly lives rent-free at her father’s Vince estate with her child. She earns a living by booking appearances for her father. A family friend told Huffington Post that Dennis delayed the start of his chemo in order to attend a paid gig in Europe organized by Marin.
Friends also believe that all recent statements that have gone out to the media are the work of Marin, not Dennis, given his weakened mental and physical state.

| | “Avatar” Shows Oneness With Environment, Popularizes Natural Jewelry Tue, January 19th 2010, 12:51 EST | | James Cameron’s Avatar does just that. He creates a world in which a human can inhabit the body of a Na’vi, one of the humanoid natives of the Utopian planet Pandora. Scientists mix human DNA with the DNA of a Na’vi, and create what essentially becomes a ‘remote-controlled body’. Initially, when Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) takes on his new 12-foot tall graceful body, he is doing so for a human corporation that wants to gain control of land directly under the homes of the Na’vi, in which the very rare element Unobtanium naturally forms. Unobtanium is said by Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) to be worth between $20 and $40 million per kilogram, or, to put it in terms we can all understand, the approximate value of the same volume of diamonds. Each character is adorned with necklaces made from indigenous plants, stones, and animal skins. They all have some identifying ornamentation, be it a beaded armband or a facial adornment. Their braided hair also holds beads and feathers. They are as much a part of the environment as the environment is part of each of them. There is no place where the Na’vi end and the ecosphere begins. | |
| | Uranus and Neptune May Have Diamond Oceans Tue, January 19th 2010, 04:18 EST | | According to Discovery News, there may be solid diamond icebergs floating in the oceans of Uranus and Neptune. The report stated that based upon the melting point of diamonds, there may indeed be actual oceans of diamonds on some of the distant planets in the solar system.
The underlying idea that suggests the existence of diamonds on distant planets is simple: diamonds tend to behave like water when exposed to extreme temperatures (melting or freezing). The challenge is that diamonds are an extremely hard material, making them very difficult to melt. Furthermore, when exposed to hot temperatures, diamonds physically transform to graphite. Once a diamond has transformed to graphite, it can then be melted into liquid.
Melting diamonds also requires a high pressure environment. Neptune and Uranus are just two planets that have a high pressure and a high temperature.
According to the study, scientist mimicked the planets’ atmospheres. They then took a tiny diamond and bombarded it with lasers at ultra high pressures. The diamond liquefied at an extremely high pressure, incomparable to anything on Earth. When they slowly began to reduce the temperature and pressure, solid diamond clusters appeared. They then floated, which was completely unexpected. The scientists reasoned that the diamonds were behaving like water.
| | Full 2010 Golden Globes Report Mon, January 18th 2010, 04:13 EST | | Last night, British funny man Ricky Gervais hosted the 2010 Golden Globe Awards, and the show was exciting as ever.
Not too surprising, although a bit disappointing, Avatar won Best Picture, beating out Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds and Reitman’s Up In The Air.
The extremely talented and funny Alec Baldwin won a much deserved award Best Actor in a Televsion Series, Comedy or musical for his role on NBC’s hit comedy 30 Rock. Unfortunately, his co-star and series creator, Tina Fay, lost out to United Stares of Tara’s Toni Collette in the actress category.
Tarantino’s brilliant WWII film, Inglorious Basterds, got the short end of the stick, not winning Best Picture or Best Screenplay. However, the incredible Christoph Waltz did win Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his menacing role in Tarantino’s masterpiece.
Michael C. Hall, who recently announced he was battling cancer, won Best Actor in a Television Series, Drama for his role as serial killer/blood spatter analyst on Showtime’s Dexter. He gave a concise, yet moving speech in which he thanked his co-stars, including his wife Jennifer Carpenter. John Lithgow won a much-deserved award for his role as Arthur Mitchell/Trinity Killer in the Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television category for Dexter.
Things were exciting on the Red Carpet as well. Newly engaged Jane Krakowski showed off her gorgeous diamond engagement ring – the first time since getting engaged.
| | Nicolas Cage Owes IRS Another $14 Million Sun, January 17th 2010, 14:48 EST | | Poor Nicolas Cage - seems as though the actor’s financial problem keep growing. Just as Cage decided to get his house in order and pay the IRS all the back taxes he owes, he discovered he owes more - $14 million more.
The government recently placed a tax lien on his real-estate possessions, including an additional $6.7 million from 2008. In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, Nicolas says “Over the course of my career I have paid at least $70 million in taxes, unfortunately, due to a recent legal situation, another approximate $14 million is owed to the IRS. However, I am under new business management and am happy to say that I am current for 2009, all taxes will be paid including any to be determined state taxes.”
Cage has built a reputation for his extravagant spending habits, even by Hollywood standards. He has spent loads of money on fast cars, diamond jewelry, yachts, castles - even a collection of shrunken heads and dinosaur skulls.
Cage is also being sued by Christina Fulton - the mother of his eldest child, Weston. Christina is suing Nicolas for fraud and breach of contract. She claims she is tangled up in his financial mismanagement and is in debt for more than $1.2 million herself as a result.
