Red Ruby Gemstones

Rubies are among the most valued natural gemstones on the market and a popular choice for engagement rings. The word ruby comes from ruber, the Latin word for red and signifies courage and emotion. A natural ruby is a pink to blood-red colored gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum (a crystalline form of aluminium oxide).

Natural rubies are priced according to color, clarity, cut and carat. First, rubies are valued according to color. Pigeon blood-red rubies are the brightest, most expensive and rare of rubies. After color, clarity determines the price of a ruby. Similar to diamonds, clear rubies command a large premium. Rubies differ from diamonds, however, in that if they do not have any needle-like rutile inclusions, it may be assumed that they have been treated. Last but still important, cut and carat weight contribute to the value and price of rubies.

James Allen offers an impressive collection of natural ruby gemstones, of all shapes and sizes. Rubies are most usually featured in engagement rings as a compliment to larger center diamonds. They can also stand on their own as striking, romantic stones.
