Green emeralds are among the most precious of natural gemstones. Emerald is a type of the mineral beryl and green color is a result of small amounts chromium and vanadium within the stone. Natural green emeralds are by far the most popular of the green color gemstones, as they symbolize rebirth and love. They are therefore the perfect choice for engagement rings as their green color represents growth and new beginnings.
Like all gemstones, emeralds are graded according to the four Cs (of natural gemstones): Color, Cut, Clarity and Crystal. The last C, crystal, refers to transparency or diaphaneity. Color is the most important factor when pricing emeralds and is broken down into three components: hue, saturation and tone. An ideal emerald for an engagement ring is a well saturated and bright.
Natural green emeralds have many inclusions and fissures. If an emerald has no visible inclusions to the eye it is considered flawless. The most expensive emeralds are eye-clean and have a strong primary green hue.
