Diamonds that once belonged to Greek shipping heiress Christina Onassis brought $14 million at an auction at Christie’s recently.
The most significant sale of the 44 jewels for auction was a pear-shaped 38-carat diamond that Onassis wore on a diamond pendant necklace. This piece sold for $7.5 million, which was almost double what it was estimated to sell for.
Christina Onassis was the daughter of shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, and she took over his business when he died. Christina died in 1988 at age 37.
Christina Onassis’ diamond jewelry collection is part of a larger jewelry auction that consists of 230 rings, bracelets, necklaces, pearls, single stones and other pieces from jewellers including Cartier. This auction brought in a total of $31 million, which is a record in Great Britain for any jewelry auction.
