Melbourne, FL 32940 – The day before his wedding, a Florida man was showing his wedding ring off to his friends when he lost his grip and ring went right down an industrial drain. Thinking that his dream wedding was also about to go down the drain, he decided to take action. Had he merely dropped it into a sink, simple tools could have helped the distraught groom-to-be in retrieving his ring, but this was a much deeper pipe—and no easy, under-sink access. From the surface, the pipe had a 10-foot vertical drop and then turned sharply at a 90-degree angle. Gravity pulled the ring along the horizontal path of the pipe a bit as well. The groom somehow thought to call Advanced Inspection Technologies, a company specializing in renting fiberscopes, videoscopes, long pipe inspection cameras, and borescopes for industrial site inspection. Borescopes are generally used to inspect the integrity of pipelines, compressors, valves and air conditioning ducts. One of the groom’s friends suggested that he try a borescope to retrieve the lost ring, and, fortunately, Advanced Inspection Technologies had one available for rent. The anxious man had only until the next day to find the ring or risk losing his bride. According to President and CEO of Advanced Inspection Technologies Paul Fitzgerald, “We were honored the young groom thought of Advanced Inspection Technologies in his time of need. We had the borescope rental tools he needed to locate and retrieve the wedding ring in his hand within hours.” After getting the equipment, the groom was able to navigate the borescope through the pipe and find the ring, which had dropped ten feet and rolled about 5 feet along the horizontal pipe. Using the ‘foreign object retrieval tool’ that came with the equipment rental, he was able to pick up the ring and slowly draw it back up the 3-inch pipe. While returning the borescope, the groom asked AIT never to tell his bride what had happened. The wedding went on as planned, and, while the couple enjoys their honeymoon, the world is reading about his ‘top secret’ adventure. I’m guessing the man watches a lot of Mission:Impossible.
