Odd, But True Marriage Proposals

Mon, November 19th 2007, 07:52 EST

A marriage proposal is a rite of passage perfected and handed down through the generations. Cultural variations still exist, but for the American male getting down on one knee, taking the hand of his beloved and asking her to marry him is standard procedure. What makes things different are those stories surrounding the event which turn people’s heads and cause them to exclaim, “You’re kidding!” Oddball marriage proposals do occur, so I’ve corralled a handful of them for your reading pleasure.

He Proposed In Front Of His Dead Brother’s Body

Funerals and marriages just do not go together, but try telling that to the man who proposed marriage in front of his brother`s casket. The man explained that his brother was looking forward to seeing him get married. What we don’t know is if she accepted or fainted on the spot.

She Heard His Proposal While Watching TV

Some women have a favorite show, watching it week in and week out. As sure as the sun will rise, you can expect that she’ll be sitting on her couch at the appointed time with eyes glued to the screen.

One intrepid young man decided to take advantage of his girlfriend’s interest in Veronica Mars by purchasing commercial time during that show and sending his proposal over the airwaves. Sitting with his girlfriend by his side, they both witnessed his TV proposal and when she calmed down from the shock he presented her with an engagement ring.

The Fake Wedding Proposal At Yankee Stadium

A-Rod was the main attraction, but it was the college prank of a lifetime which got all of the attention. It seems that there are two friends who enjoy outdoing each other with escalating pranks. One would pull a prank on the other and then the other prankster would return the favor.

Knowing that his friend would be attending the Yankees-Mariner ballgame with his girlfriend, the prankster had a marriage proposal posted on the stadium scoreboard for the couple and everyone else to see. Unfortunately for the girlfriend -- who immediately accepted the proposal -- she didn’t learn that she was also the recipient of the prank until later on. The flustered boyfriend had to explain to her what was going on, leaving the couple embarrassed and the girlfriend feeling humiliated.

He Made Her Vegas Trip Unforgettable

One young man knew that his girlfriend loved Las Vegas and even dreamed about getting married there. For weeks he would pretend to be looking at rings on the Tiffany website with her nearby, but he would immediately click off to another site moments later.

It was a pair of tickets to Las Vegas which fooled his girlfriend. While at the airport, he “accidentally” dropped the tickets and used that opportunity to propose marriage in the middle of the airport concourse with hundreds of onlookers witnessing the event.

Although proposing marriage in odd ways can be most memorable, chances are your lady will be just as happy to receive her engagement ring over dinner or while you are walking together in the park. Yet, the oddball proposals do serve to show that a little imagination makes for a truly odd, but unforgettable event!
