Smaller diamonds (often called melee) are cut in factories all over the world and available in a variety of different qualities.
The lowest quality goods are usually labeled as "commercial" and consist of I/J/K color and I1 clarity. "Promotional" goods are higher in both color and clarity, but are still cut for maximum weight - not beauty. The highest quality goods are often referred to as "Collection".
Collection diamonds are superior in several ways. Not only are they finer in both color and clarity, they have also been precision cut to maximize fire and brilliance in each diamond, despite their small size. Collection quality goods are only available from specialty dealers and are sold at a premium over other melee.
We pride ourselves on using collection diamond melee in all of our engagement designs.
A GIA or AGS diamond certificate assures customers of the value and quality of every diamond. GIA and AGS are the gold standard in diamond grading. These reports detail key characteristics of each diamond, including the 4C's and help you to identify your diamond as unique.
The four C's are the industry grade standard from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Each diamond is graded on the four standards of Carat (size), Color, Clarity and Cut.
A diamond's cut is not its shape, but how effectively the stone can return light back to the viewer's eye. A well-cut diamond will appear very brilliant and fiery; while more poorly cut stones can appear dark and lifeless, regardless of color or clarity. Not only do well-cut diamonds appear more brilliant, they can also appear larger than other stones of the same carat weight. An ideal stone has both increased brilliance as well as increased diameter relative to more deeply cut diamonds.
"Eye-Clean" is a term used to a describe a diamond that is clean to an unaided eye looking from the top down from a distance of 8 to 10 inches. Diamonds of VS2 or higher in quality will always be eye-clean. Diamonds of Si1, Si2 and I1 need to be visually inspected to determine whether any inclusions are visible from the top. We can inspect any diamond and confirm the diamond is free from any visible inclusions at no charge.
We ship every loose diamond and diamond engagement ring with an independent GIA or AGS lab report. This report can be examined by a qualified gemologist and compared against the unique characteristics of your diamond.

Conflict-free diamonds are those gems that were not obtained due to human rights abuses, child labor, violence, or environmental degradation. Although the U.N.'s Kimberly Process only covers diamonds under the control of legitimate and recognized governments, conflict-free goes one step further by rejecting diamonds from governments that trade in diamonds to bankroll their conflicts.
At James Allen, we are doing our part to make sure that our customers receive conflict-free diamonds. Specifically, our internal guidelines exceed government requirements, an initiative that provides the following:
* James Allen manufactures much of our own diamonds. Since we are the source, James Allen has first-hand knowledge of the origins of our rough diamonds and that they are conflict-free.
* James Allen does not purchase polished diamonds from sources which are not professional members of the diamond trade.
* James Allen has binding contracts with our suppliers which guarantee that the diamonds they offer to us for sale are conflict-free.
We understand that our customers care where their diamonds come from and we share that concern with you. By shopping James Allen, we strive to maintain the highest standards including sourcing diamonds from reputable providers.
